Senior citizens in Onchan are showing their gratitude to Constable Jo Williams.
Onchan Pensioners Club has nominated the officer in Isle of Man Newspapers’ Community Police Officer of the Year Award.
Members of the community are invited to nominate officers for the award, with the winner being presented with the trophy at the Chief Constable’s annual awards ceremony taking place in April.
The nomination was sent in by the club’s honorary secretary, Greta Douglas, on behalf of the 70-plus members.
’She visits us at least once every week and is very good to all of us in many ways - by organising the school children to sing to us at Christmas, she supports our special charity raffles and we are aware she visits many centres with people who have learning difficulties,’ she said.
’All in all she is a very caring person and we in the club of senior citizens all appreciate her visits and support.’
Jo has been a regular visitor to the club’s Tuesday morning coffee meeting and raffle, which is attended by more than 50 people, for about two years.
Her visits provide members with a chance to raise any concerns they may have - an ongoing issue has been vandalism. Members are also delighted that she takes along raffle prizes.
The club also holds a weekly coffee morning on Thursdays and members enjoy trips to various island attractions.
The hall, in Elm Tree Road, is the venue for activities including whist and bridge every day.
Jo has served with the island’s Constabulary for 18 years.
She works in a small team based at police headquarters, in Douglas, within the Central Neighbourhood Policing Team.
Jo explained: ’Our roles within the team are diverse and link in with numerous community groups, charities and schools.
’It has been a pleasure to be in a position that I am able to visit Onchan Pensioners’ Club, who are a large group of friendly people.
’They really do enjoy meeting my colleagues on a regular basis and they actively support lots of charities through their various raffles.’
