Golf course is sold for £2.5m - but who has bought it?

By Adrian Darbyshire in North

The sale of the island’s newest golf course has been agreed.

Glen Truan golf links, located next to the Ayres nature reserve at Bride, closed to the public at the end of September last year and was put on the market with an asking price of £2.5m.

Now directors of the family-owned business have announced that an agreement has been reached over the sale of the 150-acre site which includes the 18-hole course, a farmhouse, stables, barns and other outbuildings and two private fishing lakes.

Richard Radcliffe, who helped to develop the course back in 1990s, said: ’We set out to secure a buyer who would develop Glen Truan, whilst respecting the outstanding natural beauty of the surrounding area.

’Our purchaser is one of the leading figures in the tourism and leisure industry and has a proven track record of developing golf courses and visitor accommodation in some of the world’s most stunning locations.’

He said the sale of Glen Truan will see significant inward investment to the visitor economy, local supply chain expenditure, jobs creation and investment in marketing the Isle of Man as a visitor destination.

Full details will be announced over coming months.

Mr Radcliffe said that Glen Truan was marketed to an international audience by Chrystals, which secured interest from across the world.

The predominantly links course consists of 18 holes, practice area and 260-yard driving range.

Prince William once enjoyed a private visit to the course with the then Lieutenant Governor Air Marshal Sir Ian Macfadyen.

When he announced his retirement from the family business last year, Mr Radcliffe said it was time for others to develop the site further, perhaps with a hotel, spa or eco village.

Well said Phil. It looks like more investment in our great little island. Some people will just grab any opportunity to say something negative.

I also immediately thought 'Donald Trump' from the desertion of the buyer. I am sure it will be 'tremendous, the best golf course ever'!
