Ellan Vannin suffered penalty heartbreak in the ConIFA European Football Cup on Friday night.
The fifth/sixth place playoff match - with nine World Cup qualifying points up for grabs - started badly with Karpatalja scoring a goal after three minutes.
Their opponents were technically gifted but struggled with the intensity that EV were playing with and in the 30th minute the Manx pressure told with a well-taken shot from outside the box by Liam Cowin which made it 1-1.
Chance after chance followed for the Ellan Vannin, with the best falling to Frank Jones only for his lob over the goalkeeper to hit the crossbar, but the Ukranians again showed their quality by retaking the lead in the 42nd minute.
With no changes at half-time the Manx again started on the frontfoot but were made to pay for several missed chances Karpatalja made it 3-1 following a corner. However, Ellan Vannin dug deep and staged a comeback, with goals from Corinthians duo Chris Cannell and Sean Doyle making it 3-3 with 10 minutes to go .
With no extra-time the match was to be decided on penalties which started well for the Manx but the Ukranians held their nerve and went on to win 5-4 in the shootout.
