Ballaugh’s 98th Children’s Day
DRESS CUP: David Cannan judges
AS the world gears up for the start of the Olympic games in London, youngsters in Ballaugh got in the sporting frame of mind at the parish’s 98th Children’s Day.
The sun came out as the day kicked off with Victoria and William Fenton scooping the Dress Cup with topical Olympic-themed attire, adjudicated by former Michael MHK David Cannan and his wife.
The sports followed with youngsters taking part in running, egg and spoon and three-legged races, and extra races were held to ensure those wanting to take part could join in.
In the evening the adult races saw some great performances; if hoop, skipping and four-in-a-sack races were Olympic events, Ballaugh would certainly harbour some medal-potential talent.
Afterwards, Alfred Cannan MHK made the trophy presentation.
The Ballaugh Commissioners Cup for Boys aged 11-15 went to James Rosengrove, while it was Jess Rosengrove who took home the equivalent Joan Brew Cup for Girls.
Alex Phillips won the Stanley Cup for Boys aged 10 and under, though competition was so tight for the girls’ Stanley Cup and it was shared by Helena Stina, Deana Stina, Ellidh Hendrickson and Sian Hignet.
The big award for best participant of the afternoon section – the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Cup – went to Hermione Russell, while the runner up, and therefore winner of the Stott Murray Goblet was Olivia Done.
Out of the evening races, the Plaque for Boys 11-16 went to Matthew Nathan, with Ruth Hewings picked up the girls’ award.
Jonathan Field won the Kinvig Cup for a one-and-half-mile cycle, Niomi Phillips won the Ind Coope Cup for Mothers and David Kermeen romped home to pick up the Kinvig Cup for 440 yards.
