MANX PORT: Adrian Cain wants village to be focus of IoM Year of Culture

PORT St Mary looks set to become the focus for Manx language activities associated with the Isle of Man Year of Culture next year.

Manx language development officer Adrian Cain said the port is the obvious place to focus activities. ‘There are very successful classes in Patchwork [cafe] and the Albert [pub] is keen.’

He approached the local authority about the idea and asked if they could use more of the Manx language.

When they discussed it last week, commissioner Mark O’Meara suggested Port St Mary become Purt le Moirrey for the year and the idea was supported by the authority.

Mr O’Meara said: ‘There is a generation of people 45-plus who always refer to it as Purt le Moirrey anyway. The Isle of Man did change its name to the Isle of Woman for the weekend a few years ago. Also, I follow the cricket and the Indian cities are reverting back to their original names, Bombay is Mumbai and Calcutta is Kolkata. Language and culture are closely related. Our signage is already Manx dominated anyway.’

Mr Cain explained the sort of activities that he hopes will take place.

‘There will be Manx classes and summer lessons for children … we are hoping to do quite a lot … we want to get 14 people to learn Manx during the year, and will probably film them.

‘For households in the port they will get CDs about the language.

‘Commissioners will hopefully give out leaflets. We are hoping to get funding for businesses to produce signage in Manx. We want to get more signs [in Manx] around and create an identity in the port.’

The initiative will have no financial impact on ratepayers as it is funded by the Manx Heritage Foundation.
