Proposed fence is too high for resident of Close Rushen
HIGH FENCE?: Muriel Kneale in front of the spot where a new fence is planned to go. She only realised the planned height of the fence when the poles were erected
A CASTLETOWN resident was shocked to discover posts for a fence erected behind her property would create a 11-foot high barrier.
Muriel Kneale, who lives in Close Rushen, said she first realised there was a problem when she saw the height of poles marking where the fence would go for the gardens of properties on the new Knock Rushen estate, being built by Hartford Homes.
While the fence on the Knock Rushen side of the development would be just five feet high, because the land on the side of the development is higher than that of Close Rushen, from Muriel’s back garden (which has a six foot wall) the total height of the wall and fence would be 11 feet.
‘It would make everywhere very dark for a start,’ she said. ‘It is a lot higher than my living room window.’
She alerted the local authority and at a meeting on August 6, Castletown Commissioners’ chairman Kevin Weir said: ‘They [planners] have not looked at the other side [of the fence]. Our tenant would be looking at a huge fence. The foreman did take me down to see the kind of fencing it will end up, it would be lattice with a half inch gap, it would not let that much light in.’
Commissioner Alwyn Collister said a stop notice should be imposed and they agreed to alert the planning authority.
