THE sunshine and full programme of activities helped convince the crowds to turn out in force for this year’s Ramsey Lifeboat Day on Queen’s Promenade.

Local TT star Conor Cummins got things under way, before enjoying being on board Ramsey lifeboat for demonstrations in the bay.

Back on shore, people enjoyed food and drink stalls, a fancy dress competition, displays from the emergency services, and activities like trying out the Manx Model Boat Club’s radio controlled models.

Ramsey RNLI volunteer Theresa Shammon said: ‘It went really well. It was similar to other years – the lifeboat day has been an annual thing for a long time – but this year we had sunshine!’

She added: ‘Money raised during lifeboat day is quite a chunk, a fairly substantial part of running costs, so it helps but it’s nowhere near what it takes to keep the lifeboat going every year.

‘To meet those targets people are generous all year round, so Lifeboat Day isn’t just about raising money, it’s our way of saying thank you to people for all their help.’

The visiting Douglas lifeboat came up and together with the Ramsey boat gave a demonstration in the bay, pulling off manoeuvring demonstrations and rescue demonstrations in the bay.

Lifeboat operations manager Kevin Christian said: ‘There was a really great family atmosphere on the sea front, it all worked really well.

‘The Venture Centre were doing canoe trips, that was great. And although unfortunately we’re not allowed to do trips on the lifeboats anymore, people were able to get a good close look at them when they came into the harbour.’

At 6pm attention turned to the beach circuit and sand jumps for The Manx Grass and Sand Racing Club’s events.

Kevin added: ‘We’ve raised £4,700 so far, with cash still coming in, which is about on a par with last year.

‘Without the kind generosity of the public we couldn’t do anything, so every penny is appreciated.’
