IMPRESSIONIST PIECE: Brigid Stowell

A SELECTION of five island artists, from amateur to professional, have grouped together to display a selection of their art this autumn.

Available until November 30 at the Pavillion Restaurant and Ballroom in Laxey, Colour & Texture presents works of varying mediums by Des Brookes, Bryony Harrison, Pat Kelly, Sheena Quayle and Brigid Stowell.

Having displayed his work with the Isle of Man Art Society and at many other group exhibitions in the island for many years now, Des Brookes here presents work in a startling array of mediums upon a wide variety of topics. He seeks to push himself into exciting and original ways of producing art, and this is reflected in the works he is exhibiting.

Meanwhile, semi-professional artist, Bryony Harrison’s art is unmistakable, with characteristic bold use of colour and vibrancy. In this exhibition, Bryony presents a cross-section of her work to date, from semi-abstract landscapes to more expressive abstract work, drawing inspiration from Manx scenes, the ocean and even outer space.

Brigid Stowell is a professional artist. She is presenting a selection of impressionist paintings from her Streets of Douglas series, a study of the island’s capital; Brigid’s home for most of her life. Feeling Douglas to be an under-represented study in art in the island, this series is an attempt at finding beauty in the mundane.

Having sold pieces of her textiles and mixed media work locally, nationally and internationally, Sheena Quayle draws her inspiration from architecture, the Manx landscape, beaches and various patterns formed in natural and construction environments. Through the use of recycled and foraged materials, her work is a form of artistic upcycling.

And Pat Kelly whose style of mixing textile techniques as well as recycling and upcycling perfectly complements Sheena’s work. Specialising in plant dyeing fibres such as cashmere, silk, llama fleece and island-sourced wool, Pat’s work has long been inspired by the forest garden she developed on her family farm.

The exhibition is in the ballroom and is available for viewing during lunch and dinner opening hours.
