Charming Kit

Kit Holmes Villa Marina Arcade Saturday August 2 Review: Fergus McEwan

Sultry chanteuse Kit Holmes charmed music lovers during her Island debut on Saturday.

The Yorkshire-based singer and virtuoso guitarist performed her brand of contemporary acoustic roots music, described as a cross between Macy Gray and Nick Drake.

Her intimate gig, the first commercial concert at the recently-refurbished Villa Marina Arcade, proved why she is one of Britain's rising guitar stars.

It was the second date of her 2009 tour, which began at the Festival at The Edge in Shropshire in July and will take her across the UK until November.

The dates are intended to raise her profile before the release of her third album next spring.

At the Villa Arcade, Kit showed off her skills on the guitar and violin, performing alone and with manager Allan Greenwood after support act Truman Falls warmed up the crowd.

Promoter Jonno Gollow, who organised the show, said: 'It was a cracking night of great entertainment.

'The music was spot on and I've had lots of great comments from those who saw Kit play, so hopefully we can get her back here at some stage.'

Kit spent four years in acoustic guitar duo Dark Lantern before going solo. Her lucky break came four years ago when she was asked to tour with guitar legend John Etheridge.

She has an interest in various guitar styles but cites as big influences acoustic musicians like John Renbourn, Bert Jansch and Leo Kottke.

Her recent performances include a master-class at Paul McCartney's Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts and a headline slot at The International Guitar Festival of Great Britain.
