Clive Carroll rated as one of world's finest acoustic stars

WHEN Clive Carroll comes to the Isle of Man for GuitarFest 2008 it will be a very welcome return indeed.

John Gregory has a look at the musical career of the man who has been described as 'probably the best and most original young acoustic guitar player and composer in Britain'.

---------------

I WAS lucky enough to see Clive Carroll when he came to the Isle of Man with John Renbourn a couple of years ago and I attended a guitar workshop the pair gave too.

What was obvious about Clive was that despite his phenomenal talent he was down-to-earth and approachable.

He was also without doubt one of the best guitar players I had ever seen and some of the techniques really opened my eyes about just what could be done with the acoustic six string guitar.

When I wrote a feature about their visit at the time I opened with: 'When someone as talented as acoustic guitar legend John Renbourn calls you a genius you must be doing something right.

'Step forward Clive Carroll, no doubt one of the greatest guitar players in the world.'

His performance at GuitarFest on Sunday, August 31, will be an ummissable affair for guitar players and music lovers alike.

Clive will be performing at the Centenary Centre, Peel, and local support is being provided by Steph Joyce and Mike Reaney – of the YoYo Hearts – and the opening act for the evening is a special pairing of Manx musicians, Paul Rogers of Skeeal and Matt Kelly of King Chiaullee.

There may be another special guest appearing on the evening.

Clive told me he was in the process of recording his third album, following on from the critically acclaimed Sixth Sense and the Red Guitar.

He described it as his 'most eclectic sounding record'.

Clive's music is very hard to categorise. He is often referred to as a folk/roots player but there is much more to his work than that.

His background is in bluegrass and Irish music as he learnt his craft on a banjo that his father made for him, playing in the family band.

Taking up the guitar at 11, his playing took him through rock, funk, soul bands and orchestral performance at local venues in the Chelmsford, Essex, area.

Clive gained top music credentials, including a 1st Class Honours degree in Composition and Guitar (winning many prizes for composition and playing) from Trinity College, London.

Ten years ago, he played with John Renbourn in a local pub and that resulted in them touring together and in Clive releasing his solo debut album in 1999.

As well as his performance at the Centenary Centre he will be hosting a workshop at the South Douglas Old Friends Club, Finch Road, Douglas, on Saturday, August 30, which follows a Juan Martin masterclass at the same venue, price 5.

It was Acoustic Guitar Magazine who described Clive as 'probably the best and most original young acoustic guitar player and composer in Britain'.

But after seeing him in concert you won't need to take the magazine's word for it as you are highly likely to agree.

Tickets for the gig are 14 (concessions 10) and are available from the ticket hotline on 694555 – where details of a range of ticket options are available – and online at www.villagaiety.com
