A PHOTOGRAPHIC competition which challenged under-16s to capture the animals of the Curragh’s Wildlife Park in Ballaugh has revealed some very promising talent.

Launched at the end of July, youngsters were invited to take photos of the wild creatures and submit their best shot before August 31.

The winner and two runners up have now been selected by professional photographer Shan Fisher who does fashion photography for the island’s Gallery magazine.

The top prize was awarded to 13-year-old Arabella Maiden for her action shot of a squirrel monkey. Shan said: ‘It was a good composition and expression, but the difficulty of getting such a good image of a squirrel monkey was extremely impressive. Especially as sharp as it is with the monkey being completely natural.’ Arabella received £40 of Jessops vouchers, a season pass to the park and a framed copy of her winning photo, presented by Juan Turner MLC.

Joint runners up were Adam Peet, 13, and Keira Mackey, 10. Shan said: ‘In terms of image quality, Adam’s was the best image entered into the competition. It is extremely sharp and has the classic meerkat pose. But in terms of difficulty in getting the shot, Arabella’s image pipped it. And Keira’s photo of a ringtailed lemur was technically fantastic, with great eye contact and composition. Again the only thing Arabella’s image had over this shot was the difficulty of getting it in the first place.’

Adam and Keira won £20 Jessops vouchers and a 14-day family pass as well as framed copies of their photographs.

A wildlife park spokesman said: ‘The number of entries was fantastic and the standard of photography from all was excellent. All the entries can be seen on the park’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/curraghswildlifepark
