First visit by guitar legend Juan Martin
FANS of flamenco music are in for a real treat when Spanish guitar player Juan Martin performs at the Gaiety Theatre, Douglas, as part of GuitarFest 2008.
Not only will they see the maestro in action but will have a chance to buy one of his most significant recordings which is being re-released.
---------------
JUAN Martin has performed all over the world – but his concert on Friday, August 29, will mark his first time on Manx shores.
It will also be the first opportunity for fans to buy copies of his newly re-released album Serenade, recorded with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, which has been digitally remastered and is supplemented by five new flamenco tracks.
The album is being officially launched in the UK later in the autumn.
Juan has achieved so much in his rewarding career and among the highlights include being voted one of the top three guitarists in the world by Guitar Player magazine in the US, having a top 10 hit with the Love theme from The Thorn Birds, written by Henry Mancini, playing onstage with Miles Davis and recording a track with Rory Gallagher.
His flamenco guitar method books and DVDs remain popular all over the world as does his music. When he played in Iran a couple of years ago 3,000 people met him at the airport!
His concert in the Island will also feature Michael Berk on the bill and local classical guitarists Stepan Podobsky and Liam Carter-Hawkins.
Liam, at just 15-years-old, is the youngest performer at the inaugural GuitarFest.
Juan will also be holding a guitar masterclass on Saturday, August 30, at South Douglas Old Friends Club in Finch Road, which will be followed by a workshop by Clive Carroll, priced 5.
Juan, who first picked up the guitar at the age of six, said: 'For me the sound of the guitar was immediately compelling and it was magical straight away for me, I just needed to pick it up and play it I think I am still like that.
'I still need to go to the guitar. Once you lose this feeling to go and pick it up and enjoy playing you shouldn't play. The key to being a successful guitarist is the wanting to play. It's a simple thing really but that passion will take you to some standard.'
He said one of the nice things about GuitarFest 2008 is that various styles of music are represented.
