Fitting tribute to composer
A HOST of Manx musicians paid tribute to composer Haydn Wood on Sunday with a concert to mark the 50th anniversary of his death.
Sunday's concert at the Villa Marina featured the Isle of Man Symphony Orchestra, soloists Karen Elliott, Mandy Griffin and Geoff Corkish MHK — and more than 300 voices from choirs around the Island.
They performed favourites such as The Manx Overture, Gwendolen, I'm A Native of Peel, Song of a Thankful Heart and Roses of Picardy.
It included a reorchestrated version of the Manx National Anthem, after much hard work by the evening's compre, Charles Guard.
He gave each of the eight verses a different orchestration in line with the character of the words.
The concert was presented by the Department of Tourism and Leisure in association with the Manx Heritage Foundation and the Isle of Man Symphony Orchestra.
Haydn Wood was born in Yorkshire in 1882 but moved to the Isle of Man when he was three years old with his family.
He became one of the most popular composers of light music in the 20th century and also wrote a range of orchestral music and other songs.
