Great new CD by Maldune
Maldune will launch their new CD, Hated Islanders, with two very special gigs next week.
John Gregory had a sneak preview of the album and spoke to band member Steve Nash about the project.
THERE seem to be two types of catchy songs. There are those that stick in your head but have no merit whatsoever, those annoying tunes which whether you like them or not you cannot ignore. I'm talking about anything by the likes of the Cheeky Girls or Saturday Night by Whigfield.
Probably the mere mention of them sets them off in the jukebox in your brain.
Then there is the second kind. Tunes that go round and round and you are happy for them to do so until you have a chance to hear the original again. Songs well crafted and instantly memorable and ones you are proud to sing along to in public. Maldune are certainly masters of the latter.
By the end of the very first time I heard the title track of their new CD, I was singing along in my head with both the lyrics and the fantastic guitar riffs.
The album starts off with a classic rock and anthemic sound but never stands still. So many different influences seem to make up the sound and there are hints of different styles with the last number, a remix of an older song called I'm On Drugs, even reminding me a bit of the Stone Roses.
The one thing the album has above all is fantastic memorable melodies brilliantly executed and this is a CD that becomes so familiar so soon it will be as if you'd always had a copy.
Maldune, which features Steve Nash (on bass and vocals) Gary Smith (guitar and vocals) and Denzil Smith (drums and percusion), were formed back in the winter of 1994 by the lampost on their local council estate over two cans of lager each!
Since that time many bands have formed and subsequently split up but Maldune have a strong bond, having known each other since they were at primary school.
They have been gigging Island-wide for about 12 years, playing covers and originals but more latterly concentrating on original material.
Hated Islanders is the band's fourth album, following on from Brand New, Energize and Hallucinated Oscillation.
'In July last year we locked ourselves in Denzil's basement in Douglas with a mixing desk and producer Lee Morgan,' Steve said, and 'over an orgy of tea and cakes' Hated Islanders began to take shape.
'The album is more of a risk with a slight change of direction, a little more expansive and psychedelic while trying to keep the melodic harmonies and catchy songs, keeping the core sound of what Maldune are all about.
'We went into the studio with an open mind and we are delighted at how the album has turned out and are convinced it is our best album yet.'
The album launch will be over two nights – the Douglas leg is on Friday, February 1, at the Cornerhouse and then the western leg is at the Creek Inn, Peel, the next night, Saturday, February 2. The support act on both nights is Dan Buttimore.
Maldune will also be on the Dan Davies Show on Manx Radio tomorrow (Saturday, January 26) from 6.30pm and will perform acoustically. CDs, priced 7, will be available at gigs or direct from the band.
The band have their own loyal followers, the Dune Army, and there is no doubt they will get some new foot soldiers once music fans who haven't heard Muldune before listen to the new album.
