A WIDE wide range of shows were offered using new captioning equipment for the hard of hearing last year with great success.

And these supported performances will continue this winter with two special dates at the Gaiety Theatre.

Dawn Maddrell, general manager for the Villa Marina and Gaiety Theatre said: ‘One in six people have some degree of hearing loss.

‘Some stay away from the theatre and others come but don’t hear much of the dialogue, which spoils their enjoyment.

‘But through captioning, we can convert spoken word into visible text and greatly improve the theatre experience for our deaf, deafened and hard-of-hearing customers.’

She continued: ‘We are delighted with how well-received captioning has been at the Gaiety Theatre.

‘The support we have from show organisers has been appreciated by our deaf, deafened and hard of hearing customers.

‘I’d like to thank the Manx Deaf Society for all they have done in the last year to make captioning possible at the Gaiety Theatre and look forward to working together in the future.

‘We have a really busy year ahead and I am delighted to confirm that two more shows have captioned performances confirmed and more will be finalised shortly.’

These upcoming captioned performances are An Inspector Calls at 2.30pm on Saturday (November 17).

And the 2pm performance of Grease on Saturday, December 1.
