History lectures for all
THE Isle of Man Natural History and Antiquarian Society Lecture Series continues this weekend with Excavations at Lathom House: The Northern Court.
The event takes place between 2.30pm and 5pm on Saturday at the Manx Museum in Douglas.
It will be led by Jamie Quartermaine, senior project manager of Oxford Archaeology North.
Lathom near Ormskirk was the principal seat of the Stanley family until the late 17th century and therefore the place from which the Isle of Man was ruled.
It was slighted in the Civil War and later all trace was demolished. But recent excavations by Oxford Archaeology North, for the Lathom Park Trust, have confirmed its site and, when written up, will give historians a better idea of the great palace of the quasi-royal family – justly called The Northern Court.
This lecture follows on from the society’s visit to Lathom Chapel and Knowsley last year. Jamie Quartermaine was the senior project director for the society’s Historic Lathom Project 3 excavations in 2009. The lecture will be followed by tea.
The series then continues with Birds of Conservation Concern on the Isle of Man by Anne-Marie McDevitt, chief operating officer with Manx Birdlife.
This will take place at 2.30pm on Saturday, March 2 at the Manx Museum. And it will cover the reasons for developing a list of the Birds of Conservation Concern, how the list was drawn up and how it can be used to focus conservative action.
Examples will be given of several species, the actions required to turn around their declines on the island and what action is currently taking place.
Then at 2.30pm on Saturday, March 16, the society will hold its AGM followed by a lecture by Steve Moore, conservation officer of the Planning and Building Control Division of the Department of Infrastructure. His lecture The Conservation of the Island’s Vernacular Buildings will also take place in the museum.
And at 2.30pm on Saturday, April 13, at the museum, Sally Goodsir of Christie’s, London, will look at George Steuart in the Isle of Man and Further Afield. Architect George Steuart designed the Castle Mona in Douglas and this lecture will cover the whole of his career.
The lectures are free and open to anyone.
