THE annual Isle of Man GuitarFest, first held in 2008, will this year transform into a new concept called the Three Legs Festival.

The new festival, taking place at the end of this month, is the brainchild of Jonno Promotions’ Jonno Gollow.

It will be based in the Villa Marina Arcade and Peel Centenary Centre, and will bring together spoken word performers and singer-songwriter musicians. The six-day festival (Sunday, October 28, to Friday, November 2) will feature daytime workshops, free lunchtime performances and ticketed evening concerts, Hop-tu-Naa events and a special free daytime show for the very young.

On the Sunday, BBC Radio 2 folk award winners Lau (see album review on page 22) will play their inventive folk at the Centenary Centre. Support comes from talented island harpist Erika Kelly and local guitarist MalcolmStitt. Tickets are £20.

Then on the following night, the Villa Marina Arcade will host a candid evening with The Waterboys’ frontman Mike Scott, marking the launch of his memoir Adventures Of A Waterboy with readings from the book, followed by a short acoustic set with his colleague, fiddler SteveWickham.

The Tuesday will host a free afternoon with Chris T-T who will sing AA Milne’s words to his music in the Villa Arcade. That evening Catfish Keith’s Country Blues night will take place in the Arcade. Tickets are £15.

On the Thursday night Benny Gallagher, who has worked with the likes of Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Pete Townsend and Elkie Brooks, will be in concert in the Villa Arcade. Tickets are £15. Kath Crowe will support.

And finally, a concert will be performed on the Friday, by O’Hooley and Tidow at the Centenary Centre in Peel. Pianist, composer, songwriter and interpreter Belinda O’Hooley was previously in Northumbrian band Rachel Unthank and the Winterset and wrote two of the songs on their Mercury-nominated album The Bairns. Tickets are £15. Matt Creer will support.

Many of the visiting and island musicians will host workshops and classes throughout the festival.

Tickets for the Douglas events are available at www.villagaiety.com or on 600555. And tickets for the Peel concerts are available from Celtic Gold in Peel and Peter Norris Music in Douglas.
