Pupils show Freedom to Flourish by designing their own dream sculpture
FINAL proposals for a sculpture at Willaston Primary School have been approved by the Arts Council following a presentation by year six pupils.
Children at the school have been working with artist Krista Magee and making valuable contributions towards a design for a sculpture for their playground known as the rural area.
In weekly workshops, held since September, they have made origami models, painted, drawn, modelled plasticine, made plaster splats and shapes.
The pupils worked in a team to create a scale model and plan of the site which formed an exhibition that was open to the community at Willaston Methodist Chapel at the weekend. The exhibition is on display at Ronaldsway airport until the end of the month.
The exhibition presents all the children's ideas and designs for the sculpture that have emerged during workshops and also the pupils' dream sculpture.
It is this dream sculpture that the Arts Council has approved with a budget sourced from lottery funding. The project aims to be complete by the end of the school's summer term this year.
Krista said: 'The art of sculpture spans all boundaries. We have considered this project from the perspective of maths and science and we have developed a descriptive language and channelled our creativity.
Overcoming the fears of blank canvases is a lesson all too familiar to me and I'm pleased to note that the fearlessness of this class is overwhelming — they have truly relished their Freedom to Flourish.'
