The best of The British

THE revamped upstairs room at The British on North Quay, Douglas, will host a second comedy night on Wednesday (January 30) night.

The headlining comedian is Joe Rowntree - a performer and writer who has composed put-downs for Anne Robinson on the Weakest Link.

Graduating in Psychology, Joe spends his days delivering inspirational and educational courses in goal mapping, mind mapping and accelerated learning techniques.

But, in the evenings, he trades his surreal observations for laughter, performing in some of the most prestigious and reputable comedy clubs in and around London and across Britain.

Most recently he completed a UK Tour of Brainiac Live after appearing in the award winning hit TV show Brainiac: Science Abuse (Sky One) which saw him take part in live and highly dangerous scientific experiments.

The support act for the night is Paul Ricketts who is described as ‘weird and wonderful’ by The Stage. Apparently, Paul tried his hand as a bird-scarer, chimney sweep, musician, playwright, pornographer, stage hand and primary school teacher before turning to stand-up comedy on the advice of his therapist. His distinctive skewed view of the world informs his black ‘sub–urban’ comedy. His intelligent humour focuses not only on sharp observations from life, but also racial, cultural and satirical subject, intermingled with strangle tales of ordinary madness.

And the night will be hosted by Erich McElroy who, originally from Seattle in the States, started doing stand-up in Britain five years ago and has performed regularly on the London circuit. In 2006 Erich took his show Brokeback Britain to Edinburgh and won the Official Fringe Sell Out Award.

The doors open at 7.30pm and the show starts at 8.15pm. Tickets are £18 and available at The British or call 699443.
