The Manx Sound Exchange: May the battle commence

Mannifest 2012: Mr Eliminator & The Deadly Vipers

Mannifest 2012: Mr Eliminator & The Deadly Vipers

AMBER’s annual Battle of the Bands is back, and the first heats are up this weekend.

Tomorrow (Friday) night is the opening round of the competition that will now have original and cover acts in a single category.

Battling tomorrow are cover bands The Shapes, and The Same and original act Honourable. In Saturday’s heat it’s an all-original line up, comprising The Water is Rising, Mr Eliminator and the Deadly Vipers, and defending champions 7 Year Black Hole.

To sweeten the deal Amber Bar and Lounge will offer happy hours each Friday and Saturday night throughout November between 7.30pm and 8.30pm – and there is word of a new spirit found nowhere else in the island.

The bands will play from 9pm, and the live music will sound until 1.30am.

Organiser Shri Naik said: ‘We will be providing a basic drum kit and PA, though bands can feel free to bring own mics or DI boxes. The bar will also be lit up with extra stage lighting thanks to ELS.

‘We have enough bands for the competition but there are still a couple more last-minute spaces. Contact me on 464827 or at shri@sleepwellhotels.com’

Acts will be given a maximum of one and a half hours, including setup time and judging time, and no less than 45 minutes performing.

Each night’s winner will receive £150, and a chance to go back on for a little celebratory set. The overall winner in will receive £500, second place £300 and third £200, with first and second also winning a six hour recording session at Factory Lane Studio in Peel,

In other musical news, 3 Million are back on the gig scene after a few months out, and have a trip away for gigs in Lancaster and Liverpool coming up on November 8-11. Their album can still be downloaded for free through their Facebook page, or picked up at a gig, including at The Highwayman in Peel on Saturday.

Coming next weekend, Manx ‘Zebracore’ specialists Postcode are part of a bill that includes UK acts comedy rockers The Awesomeness and ‘mashed punktato’ act Kraul, who are returning from Blackpool for their fourth Manx visit. The trio will play at The Creek in Peel on Friday, November 9, and at The Engine Room in The Ship, Castletown, on the Saturday.
