Top musicians head to the Isle of Man

Jonno Gollow of JonnoPromotions is set for his busiest year to date.

What Where When editor John Gregory caught up with him to discuss his musical plans for the TT, GuitarFest and his birthday!

---------------

Jonno Gollow has organised countless quality gigs over the past few years, but 2009 will set the standard even higher.

He has announced some fantastic artists for this year's Isle of Man GuitarFest but there is plenty in store before then with a mixture of new and familiar faces set to visit Manx shores.

Coming up first is the Rev Hammer gig with The Ballaghs on Sunday, March 29 at the South Douglas Old Friends' Association club.

Tickets are 12 and are available from Peter Norris Music, Douglas, Shakti Man, Ramsey, Ramsey Music Supplies and Celtic Gold, Peel.

Saturday, May 23, sees the much anticipated return of Jeff Lang and Grant Cummerford, with support from Rhysical Pheck and Clara Barker at the Peel Centenary Centre. The gig is for Jonno's birthday bonanza.

'Rather than a birthday party, I thought, let's have a birthday gig!' he said.

It should prove to be a fantastic night – Jeff's debut performance in the Island last year left a lasting impression on all who were there and this time his appearance will be part of his Half Seas Over tour.

June will see Steve Gibbons, a highly familiar face at the TT and Manx Grand Prix, return to the Island with his current band for a special TT tour.

'When Steve was over doing the Dylan Project gig in November he and I talked about this at 3am in the morning over a beer or three,' Jonno explained.

'He said he would love to come back and do something but he found when he did the gig at the Masonic Hall in Douglas at GuitarFest (2008) it was too big and impersonal, so it is going to be intimate gigs – the South Douglas Old Friends' Association, Douglas, Peel Centenary Centre and the Riverside Pavilion in Laxey.'

There will be three gigs in Douglas, two in Laxey and two in Peel. The gigs start on Thursday, June 4.

Tickets will be 15 at each venue.

On June 27, Jonno will once again put on another gig – The Gathering – which consists of some of the legends of folk rock.

The band includes Clive Bunker (Jethro Tull, Pentangle), Jerry Donahue (Fairport Convention, Fotheringay), Ray Jackson (Lindisfarne), Rick Kemp (Steeleye Span, Maddy Prior Band) and Doug Morter (Albion Band, Magna Carter).

The gig will also feature Kristina Donahue and main support from Derrin Nauendorf and local support from Strengyn (Paul Rogers and Matt Kelly).

Last year's inaugural Isle of Man GuitarFest was a hugely memorable event which featured some of the very best guitarists in the world.

This year's event will feature a line up that is just as spectacular.

Angelo Palladino and his band The Skeleton Crew will be kicking things off in style on Thursday, September 3, with support from Walter Ego.

Angelo was brought to the Island by Jonno earlier this year, playing on a bill with Jon Gomm and winning plenty of new fans. This will be his first gig with his band in the Island.

On Friday, September 4, Gary Ryan will be playing, supported by Pete Smith and Roger Inniss.

On Saturday, September 5, the co-headliners will be Pierre Bensusan and Gordon Giltrap (playing separately). Both are amazing guitarists and readers of guitar magazines will be familiar with their work.

The support will be Michael Berk who last year supported flamenco maestro Juan Martin at GuitarFest.

And on Sunday, September 7, Rod Clements will be appearing with support from Amrit Sond.

Rod is a former bass player and fiddle player with Lindisfarne and is now a mean blues slide guitar player.

Over the course of the festival music lovers will hear blues, rock, classical, acoustic folk and world music!

Jonno added: 'There are going to be workshops over the weekend and what I have been trying to finalise is a local stage on Friday afternoon, Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon. Subject to approval, there will be an opportunity for local artists to perform on a new stage.

It's a free stage for the Manx public. I am hoping to involve even more Manx musicians than I did last year.

'We have amazing talent here, it is just phenomenal.'

And, as the headline acts will be in the Island for the weekend, you just never know who the local acts will get to play in front of!

There will be even more on these events in forthcoming editions of What Where When and for further information on any of these acts see their MySpace or website pages.

A number of the gigs will be in association with Manx Radio.
