Villa hosts pop Idles

IT is an opportunity for both band and audience at the Villa Marina’s Royal Hall on November 23, as hotly-tipped Bristol indie up-and-comers Idles get a chance to perform at the prestigious venue.
The Villa might not quite be Wembley Arena, but stands out on the Idles mostly club-orientated tour schedule through Britain and France, though from the reviews the band have been getting, they won’t fail to leave an impression.
With the release of their debut EP Welcome, the five-piece have begun to outgrow the scene in the West Country and gain national attention.
The sound is big, indie rock wedged somewhere between the intense rock ‘n’ roll of The Walkmen and the dark post-punk of Joy Division, and is one fans of the likes of Interpol, Talking Heads, XTC, The Maccabees and Future of The Left will enjoy.
They are five best friends who met at university and on the DJing circuit in Bristol, and since starting Idles a few years back they’ve become the forerunners in Bristol, and been part of the creation of a strong and still growing local scene.
After putting on a local indie club night called Batcave in their home town, singer and frontman Joe Talbot and bassist Adam Devonshire took their shared love for MTV2’s 120 minutes – the TV show dedicated to alternative music and videos – and the need for a creative outlet and started what would become Idles.
In the space of 18 months the band grew from the two of them sat in their flat to a fully-fledged five-piece, with the inclusion of dual guitarists Andy S and Mark Bowen, and lively drummer Jon Beavis.
The members’ differing tastes in music led to a band with a punk ethic and eclectic sound, and they quickly improved their local stock with regular slots at nearby festivals and headlined two of them - Dot to Dot and Simple Things.
Idles have also supported a great range of touring bands such as Pulled Apart By Horses, Health, Danananakroyd, Wild Palms, No Age, The Chapman Family, Male Bonding and Le Shark, and recorded the EP Welcome in Geoff Barrow’s State Of Art Studios in Easton.
The music has an urgency to it, and Meydei and the moody 26/27 in particular are worth searching YouTube for a preview of what will likely be a visceral, fully-charged and passionately delivered live show at 8pm in the Villa Marina.
Word is that support will come from island psychedelic rockers Cartesian Jetstream, and if that is indeed the case it looks like a great match.
