Whiskey Dogs’ wild Americana in west
Driffield Folk Festival 2011 - The Whiskey Dogs
BETWEEN the Moddey Dhoo and the well-stocked bar at the White House pub, Peel enjoys a strong affinity with both whiskey and dogs, so visiting band The Whiskey Dogs should feel right at home.
The rootsy Americana outfit play at the Centenary Centre on Saturday, with support from Papa Cass and Blue John.
The Whiskey Dogs describe their sound as authentic, good time Americana. Old time mountain music, hillbilly blues, dust-bowl ballads and jug band hokum are all played in the crazy spirit of the 1920s and 30s.
Fronting the band on vocals is the soulful Pete Bolton who, before forming The Whiskey Dogs, toured extensively with his previous Americana band, The Alley Cats, performing at festivals and arts venues throughout the UK and Europe. They also won international busking competitions and took several awards in major street festivals. Pete’s rhythmic and intricate guitar style and driving banjo playing are key parts to the distinctive sound.
Polly Bolton, the most recent band member, joins Pete on double bass, mandolin and banjo mandolin.
As well as adding a solid old-timey feel on bass, she is also a reputedly passionate and melodic mandolin player, with fast and furious soloing and lively stage presence adding an enormous energy to the band.
Playing a weird and wonderful array of instruments including banjolin, fiddle, mandolin and phono-fiddle is the talented multi-instrumentalist Brian Swinton, bringing a lively sense of fun to the band.
The Whiskey Dogs lend a driving energy to the music of the period with kazoos, whistles and horns, adding zany twists to their up-beat performances, influenced by Americana heroes the Carter Family, Skillet Lickers and Memphis Jug Band as well as by contemporary bands such as The Old Crow Medicine Show and The Carolina Chocolate Drops.
Saturday’s show starts at 8pm. Tickets, costing £15, are available from Celtic Gold, Peel; Shakti Man, Ramsey; and Peter Norris Music, Douglas; or at www.centenarycentre.com
