EIGHTEEN workers have been laid off from the Spectrum building site on Douglas seafront – but developers Dandara insist the move is not linked to the credit crunch or any downturn in the construction industry.
There are more than 200 builders and other tradesmen working on the scheme to convert the former Crescent cinema into flats.

While 18 casual workers were told last week that they were being laid off, Dandara director Joe McLoughlin insisted these workers were not required in the next stage of the development.

'It's business as usual - nothing has changed,' he said, adding that only four of the 18 were Manx workers and the others had all required work permits.
