DOUGLAS Council joined forces with the UK to mark Armed Forces Day with the raising of a flag by Mayor Mike Gelling in support of the men and women of the armed forces community, past and present.
Armed Forces Day – formerly Veterans' Day – was organised by the Ministry of Defence to honour the contribution of those who serve or have served in Her Majesty's Armed Forces and took place on Saturday.
Mr Gelling said: 'I was very happy to consent to take part in a parallel ceremony here in Douglas.
'It is important that we demonstrate our support for those serving or who have served, in the armed forces. We rely on them for the protection of our country and our freedom, and we see reports on a daily basis of the perils they face in doing so.
'It is all too easy, here in the Isle of Man, to dismiss such a display of support as "a UK thing". To do that, however, is to fail to appreciate the service of local people in the armed forces.
'Many older citizens are veterans of war service and there are considerable numbers today of younger people forging careers in the forces.
'We owe the armed forces a debt of gratitude which we can never repay in full, and this flag will serve as a reminder that we recognise their achievements and appreciate their service.'
The specially commissioned Armed Forces Day flag – inspired by the Union Jack – was raised on Monday, June 22.
In the Isle of Man Armed Forces Day will be formally celebrated on July 26.
