THE stormy conditions have forced the Steam Packet to cancel sailings between Douglas and Heysham.
The 8.45am sailing from Douglas to Heysham and the 2.15pm return sailing have both been cancelled.

Passengers are advised to contact the reservations team to make alternative arrangements, telephone 661661.

Meanwhile, the gale force winds and pouring rain are causing problems on the roads.

Police are warning motorists to be wary of flooding, high winds and reduced visibility.

The Strathallan area of Douglas promenades has been closed off along King Edward Road from the bottom of Summerhill to Port Jack.

Shore Road, Rushen, in the Carrick Bay (Gansey) area was closed and due to reopen to traffic at 2.30pm.

Department of Transport engineers were called out to deal with fallen trees at Slieau Lewaigue and Ballaugh last night.

Engineers have either dealt with, or are in the process of dealing with, flooding in the following areas:

  • New Road, Laxey

  • Ballacraine to Greeba

  • Union Mills to Crosby

  • Barragarrow

  • Sulby to Kirk Michael

  • West Baldwin

  • Bridge Nurseries, St Marks

  • Ballabeg

  • Abbeylands

  • Lower Foxdale

  • Ramsey Hairpin

  • Old Castletown Road

A number of patrol cars are stationed around the Island with their blue lights flashing in an attempt to slow down the traffic.

Motorists are also being asked to show respect to workmen who are battling to alleviate standing water in the roads and to drive carefully around them.

Meanwhile, electricity supplies to 60 properties in the Ballaragh area of Laxey hwere cut off after an overhead line was brought down by the storms. Engineers have now restored supplies.

This evening's presentation regarding the HPV Vaccination Programme at Castle Rushen High School has been postponed due to the adverse weather conditions. A new date will be set and parents will be notified.

YOUR COMMENTS

Typical! A little bit of rain and the Island comes to a standstill! Some countries have this weather all the time and its not a problem. Deal with it!!
SM

Yes SM, there are countries that deal with this all the time. Because they deal with it all the time, it is worth their while investing in storm drains, huge networks of underground tunnels to carry the water away etc. Unless you're offering to pay for the IOM to be equally equipped we will always struggle to cope with the occasional bout of extreme weather. Have you been outside today? As I came up Sartfell this morning the rain was running off the fields so hard is was shooting through the air six feet horizontally before hitting the road! Anyway, thanks for your helpful, constructive advice.
JB @ KM

SM, I'd hardly say it was at a standstill, talk about being over dramatic! Go and do a crossword..
WEATHER WATCHER, Douglas

I think SM has a point! It's just typical a bit of rough weather and the Steam Packet cancels everything! They should have got a boat that is suitable for the winter in the Irish Sea. As for extreme weather... this is the normal weather for this time of year! The roads should have been built with this in mind! Luckily in my palacial underground layer in the Foxdale hills I am prepared for this! Before you say it... theres a boat in the morning... or not!
PRESIDENT OF FOXDALE

The storms we have had over the last week don't compare to the likes of Cumbria etc, but I think we should praise the Dept of Transport guys who have been out sorting the drains and clearing up all the debris from the roadside, working through the night and early hours of the morning in terrible conditions. Well done lads.
MISC

Oh dear SM. Someone is being very OTT! I think the DOT have done a fantastic job of clearing up. And maybe 'President of Foxdale' you should get out of your 'underground layer in the Foxdale hills' and take a look around at what a fab job they have done. You can't help them being prepared for weather like this. The DOT are trying to make it as easy for us to get around as they possibly can!
