Continent 8 opens Island headquarters

INTERNATIONAL co-operation and the role of existing firms in attracting new business were highlighted at the official opening of Continent 8's data centre.

A delegation from the Canadian Mohawk territory of Kahnawake was among the guests gathered at the Riverside Trading Estate to mark the occasion.

Continent 8 has an exclusive agreement with Mohawk Internet Technologies and also provides services in Malta and Singapore.

Non-executive chairman John Webster stressed the importance of having the company's global headquarters in the Isle of Man, saying: 'Had Continent 8 been seeking simply to capitalise on its success in Kahnawake and just establish a high-tech data centre here, I would not have been interested in being chairman.'

He was introduced to Continent 8 founders Michael Tobin and Jay Stubina through Microgaming chief executive Roger Raatgever.

'Such word-of-mouth promotion continues to be the best way to market,' he said. 'It has established critical mass, skills and reputation in several niche sectors.'

Mr Webster said it was appropriate that Treasury Minister Allan Bell cut the ribbon to open the centre as he had supported the industry during good times and bad.

Mr Bell spoke about the growing relationship between the Isle of Man and Kahnawake, saying he hoped this would be developed further.

'There is a great synergy between the two - we are both proud nations with a history and culture we want to protect,' he said. 'I am delighted that we have been able to come together on this particular project.'

This was the second data centre to officially open in the Island in little more than a week following Domicilium's ceremony on January 17.

Mr Bell said he was convinced that the gaming industry was here to stay and that the US would eventually regulate, despite the current reticence.

'We are very proud of the industry and I believe it is absolutely right that the government supports you,' he said.
