First step to success as IBS girl takes Shell title
THE Island final of the Shell Step Student Scheme took place at the International Business School.
It was a hard fought contest with 18 students presenting their summer projects to a captivated audience, including Trade and Industry Minister David Cretney.
The DTI sponsors the scheme, which provides each undergraduate applicant with a placement at a local firm during their summer holiday.
They are given a project that it is hoped, upon completion by the student, will add some considerable value to the company's operations.
This year the scheme hosted an unprecedented 22 young students.
Four students were unable to attend the final event.
However, the remaining 18 projects presented were of a very high standard.
The students made presentations on their studies.
Judges Helen Cowley and Maree Bashforth retired to deliberate while the students, their host companies and the guests mingled
over lunch.
Before the final results were read out and the presentations were made by Mr Cretney, the judges explained what a tight contest it had been and how impressed they had been by the standards achieved.
Judges' commendations went to Emma Cuddy and Darryl Haslett, both placed at Lloyds TSB and Rob Weaver of GE Aviation.
The Best Presentation Shield, donated by Onchan Rotary Club, was presented to David Ballantyne for his project at Colas.
The 2008 runner up was awarded to Peveril Heimisson of DMS and finally, the winner of the Most Enterprising Student 2008 went to Anna Musgrove for her out-standing project for Robinsons fruit and vegetable suppliers.
Anna, a student at the International Business School, and Peveril Heimisson, of Leicester University, went on to represent the Island at the regional Step final in Cumbria on August 28.
At this Peveril came joint first and is due to represent the Island at the North England final in Manchester.
IBS acting director, Mike Lloyd-Williams said: 'We are delighted by Anna's success at the Island final, especially as this is the first time that a student from the International Business School has won the
local heat.
'This is a fantastic achievement both for Anna and the Business School,' he added.
DTI Minister David Cretney said: 'I would like to thank both Anna and Peveril for representing the Island at the Regional Final.
'They both did the DTI, and the Island, proud.
'We are very excited to have Peveril move on to the North England final and eagerly await the outcome.'
