Horse innovation wins award for Manx firm

A TROMODE company has won a prestigious innovation award for its equine body analysis equipment.

Equistat, based at Tromode industrial estate, was awarded the Innovation Award at the British Equine Trade Association's international trade show, at Birmingham's NEC.

The device, launched last July, provides information such as a horse's hydration status, cellular health, physiological stress, body fat percentage and weight at the touch of a button.

The award was collected by Louise Furniss, who works in international sales and marketing.

'We are all absolutely thrilled to receive this Innovation Award and recognition for our products from such a prestigious institution as BETA,' she said.

'After all the hard work and effort over the previous 10 years in research and development we are delighted that this has been recognised in such a way — it will certainly take pride of place in the office.'

The judges praised the company, saying that it was an 'intriguing breakthrough with high welfare potential' and that further development would 'undoubtedly enhance the care of equines'.

There are two versions of the Equistat machines, the Pro for racehorse owners, trainers and vets and the Lite version intended for non-professional horse owners.

It operates via electrode cuffs on the hock and knee which allow the Equistat to measure fat levels which are displayed on an LCD screen.

The electric current causes no harm to the animal.

The company believes the devices are set to revolutionise equine care.

For racehorse owners and trainers the data is useful in determining an animal's health and response to training.

The Equistat can also determine hydration levels which can dramatically affect performance in races.

A racehorse can lose up to 15 litres of fluid per hour during training or racing and even a small level of dehydration can have a big effect on performance.

The Equistat machine can also determine a horse's weight and metabolic rate so it can be used as a guide to how much feed the animal needs which in turn makes sure an animal does not lack energy or gain too much weight.
