PORT St Mary has a new interim clerk – Castletown commissioners’ clerk Eddie Convery.
The former clerk at Port St Mary, Jason Roberts, took up his new role as clerk at Port Erin on Monday following the retirement of Mike Kewley.
Last week, Port St Mary commissioners’ chairman Bernadette McCabe approached Castletown and asked for its assistance in the short term.
‘They asked if we could help them out whilst they are interviewing for a new clerk,’ said Castletown commissioners’ chairman Kevin Weir. ‘Eddie will be based in Castletown, he is on the end of the phone, he will go over [to Port St Mary] once a week and help out.
‘It’s a good neighbourly thing to do, we are helping them out, we are not charging or anything. It is a short term agreement. In future, Castletown might need help from Port St Mary. This is the way things are changing. Local authorities are trying to help each other more. It should be for a maximum of three months. Eddie came out extremely well in this for volunteering.’
In recent weeks, there has been discussion about increased sharing of services between Port Erin and Port St Mary, including the role of clerk.
At both authorities’ meetings, two weeks ago, two separate notices of motion proposing greater collaboration be investigated received the unanimous support of both boards. A meeting will be held in the near future.
