RUSHEN Parish Fete in the Royal British Legion Hall in Port Erin, raised more than £1,600 for church funds.

Church warden Gerry Callister said the amount was £200 higher than that raised at last year’s fete. The funds are raised on stalls, through raffles and donations, plus this year a ‘mini Erin Olympics’ game organised by Gilly and Ginny Allen.

Rushen MHK Phil Gawne opened Saturday’s proceedings along with Annie Kissack, he said: ‘It was a wonderful event, a really good community affair. It was great to see so many people turning up and raising money for the church and I was honoured to be asked to open the fete and only make one corny joke in the opening speech. I said, looking outside the window, this is our fate this summer!’

Sadly for his joke, the weather was fine last Saturday afternoon: ‘It was just the weather we wanted,’ said Gerry. ‘People did not go to the beach.’

The parish needs all the funds it can raise for costly ongoing repairs to its ageing church buildings, said Gerry.
