WHY rock and spoon racing, throwing a bean bag through a hoop and dressing up quickly aren’t Olympic sports is beyond those at Mooinjey Veggey playgroup, who had fun doing all this during their own mini Olympics in Ballasalla village hall.

Playground leader Karen Peters organised the event to give the children, aged two to four, a taste of Olympic fever.

‘It went swimmingly,’ she said. ‘They put the professionals to shame. The kids were really good, they were very well behaved.’

Laminated medals and certificates with lollies – another thing Olympians no doubt miss out on – went to winners.

‘They take it all very seriously,’ said Karen. ‘We passed the Olympic torch from one person to another and then when it got to the last one, she ran around garden in slow motion. They had seen the torch on TV and as it passed through the island. They are very intelligent little people.’

The playgroup meets from Monday to Friday, 9.15am to 12.15pm during term time. For information, phone 453577.
