Peel Coal Fund still here to help the needy
‘THE generosity of some people amazes me’
That’s the view of Peel Coal Fund chairman Robert Wooding after the fund – which will have been in continuous operation for 50 years next year – received some very generous donations during the year. In addition, the Manx Lottery Trust has supported the fund for the last few years.
The Peel Coal Fund recently held its annual general meeting and the secretary/treasurer Colin Moore reported on another highly successful year in which 146 households in Peel received assistance to a total value of £15,448.
During the year, the fund received some very generous donations – for which the committee are very grateful – and it is anticipated that distributions for the current year will exceed £16,000 with payments starting in January 2013. ‘This year is highly significant as it marks 50 years since the fund was reformed in 1963 and has been in continuous existence since,’ said Mr Wooding.
Distributions mainly go towards retired people on fixed incomes, some of whom have health problems, in addition a few young people in difficult circumstances are also helped, but the latter are very much in the minority.
The Peel Coal Fund only helps those living in the town, and this help is now mainly by way of credit towards electricity costs.
Mr Wooding explained: ‘There used to be a coal fund a long, long time ago before the Second World War and then it became defunct.
‘In 1963 a legacy was left to the coal fund and it had to be re-constituted and it has run continuously since then.’
In the beginning the recipients would mainly be buying coal. Mr Wooding said: ‘I remember the days of the coal. One time [we had] 300 people on coal and about 100 on electricity.’
Meanwhile, at the Peel Coal Fund annual general meeting the following officials were elected for the ensuing year: chairman – Robert Wooding, secretary/treasurer – Colin Moore, committee – Margery Fargher, Lynn Heath, Margaret Kaighin, Elizabeth Humphreys, Jane Young, and Herbert Watterson, honorary auditor – Eddie Convery.
