JUST one hamper of Fairtrade goods raised a super £900 for the Port Erin branch of Anti-Cancer Association.
Isle of Man Bank Port Erin branch employee Val Bousfield put the hamper together and it was on display at the Manx Co-operative. Customers were asked to give a donation to the association and were entered into a draw, which was won by a Port Erin resident.
A total of £500 was raised from donations given at the store and the Co-operative donated £400 from its booster fund.
The association’s Port Erin branch secretary Pam Clucas said: ‘We were just overwhelmed. The bank sometimes gives money to the association, Val knits Easter chicks and ducks and Catherine [Meehan, Pam’s daughter] holds an afternoon tea, but we have never had someone else like the Co-op give us a donation before – we were thrilled to bits.’
This has been a good year for the branch, said Pam. Catherine’s afternoon tea, held in June, raised £700 for the association, also Probus donated the proceeds of a raffle, held every month, and from the past year this amounted to £320.
The funds go to research and also towards financing Stay Well clinics and other items that remain on island.
