THE Diamond Jubilee Fair, held in Ballachurry orchard, Ballafesson, on August 4, was worth waiting for.

Postponed from July 7 because of wet weather, after weeks of rain, the sun on the day of the fair helped to attract many to the event.

There were sports for the children and side shows and two bouncy castles, thanks to sponsorship for one of the castles from Manx Co-operative Society. Rushen Twirlers of varying ages gave lovely performances. Rushen MHK Phil Gawne came along with his fiddle and played lots of Manx tunes.

DJ Mark Cowin made up for the lack of performers – many originally booked to appear were on holiday – and played a great variety of music.

Refreshments were served from the marquee manned by members of the Living Hope Church who volunteered to help out. Cream scones and teas were provided with the cream and milk being donated by Cooil Brothers and cakes made by lots of women from the locality.

A bout of ‘It’s a Knockout’ was held in the upper part of the orchard, organised by Alan Clucas and his helpers and this was great fun to watch with four teams from the south taking part in all sorts of games and getting very wet. The Rushen South team won. Isle of Man Bank provided the finance for the team T-shirts and plaques for the winners.

First Rushen Scouts manned the car park and provided a tent in the orchard.

The organisers, Rushen Parish and Port Erin Commissioners, thanked everyone who helped to make the day such a success and it raised £600 for local charities. Special thanks went to Stanley Clucas and his daughter Jackie for doing so much of the organising and other members of his family for working so hard to bring the event together.
