SCOUTS usually tie knots rather than get into them, but at a meeting in the scout hall in Port Erin last month 1st Rushen Scouts were introduced to the physical contortions that can be yoga by teacher Daxa Patel.
Daxa was invited by scout leader Jay Thompson, who is keen for the scouts – aged 10 to 14 – to explore new activities.
‘I talked about bringing the mind and body together through doing yoga, when they are not together you get stress,’ said Daxa. ‘It is nothing to do with religion, it’s about keeping well.’
Some positions challenged their balance, co-ordination and spatial awareness, one challenged their sense of humour.
‘At the end when I said we were going into the savasana, or corpse, position, and turned the lights off there were a few giggles, but they settled down. They enjoyed it. They all held stress and they learned they can help themselves through postures and breathing.’
