PROFESSIONAL photographer Ian Pilbeam, based in Peel, has had one of his photographs selected for the prestigious Shot Up North (SUN) Awards 2012.

Now in its 24th year, the SUN Awards are designed to show the diversity of photographers styles in the north of the UK, across the disciplines of Advertising, Design, Fashion and Editorial.

Each year, just 50 images are selected from the many submitted to form a touring exhibition and an accompanying book.

All judging is done anonymously by an independent panel drawn from key figures in the industry.

The 2012 exhibition is currently showing at Matt & Phreds in Manchester and will be touring various venues, including the Leeds Gallery, in the coming months.

This is the fourth time in seven years that Ian has won a SUN Award; this year with an image that was taken in Peel, at the old open air swimming pool. ‘It is a digital image captured entirely in camera with no post production manipulation,’ said Ian.

He said that images selected for the exhibition and book are always at the cutting edge of professional photography.

‘Recently I have been experimenting with in-camera techniques, so to have one of these images chosen is validation for this new direction,’ he said.

Ian studied photography at art college and worked in advertising in London for many years as an art director, briefing photographers on what to do.

He turned professional about 12 years ago when high end digital backs first became available for studio cameras.
