IN association with National Pet Month, Arg Beiyn Veterinary Practice, Parliament Street, Ramsey, is holding a combined charity fun day and open day on Saturday, April 21, from 10am-4pm.
One of the aims is to promote responsible pet ownership, but the ultimate goal is to raise money and awareness for the two charities that Arg Beiyn is supporting this year: the Manx Wildlife Trust and Hounds for Heroes, a UK- based charity that provides and trains assistance dogs for severely injured servicemen.
Edric Cross, a senior vet at the practice, said: ‘We believe Hounds for Heroes to be a most worthy charity. Supporting it is our way of expressing gratitude to our injured servicemen who have given much in performance of their duties and whose lives will remain permanently changed as a result of injuries sustained in theatres of war such as Afghanistan.’
The surgery will be open for a behind-the-scenes look at a veterinary practice and, with rehabilitation in mind, there will be an opportunity to see how they take an injured dog from the start of its problem through investigation and surgery to its recovery phase using the island’s only professionally-run hydrotherapy and physiotherapy service for dogs. There will be opportunities throughout the day to see dogs using an underwater treadmill.
There will also be a Touch Tank run by the Manx Wildlife Trust in the surgery.
On the garden area on the corner of East Street and Parliament Street, there will be street performers and entertainment acts, dog agility and obedience displays, miniature ponies, piglets and wild creatures from the Curraghs Wildlife Park. With Andrew Barton Photography present throughout the day, there will be the opportunity for a few to have a photographic portrait taken while handling one of the wild animals. A live band at East Street at 3pm will round off the afternoon.
All visitors to Ramsey can take part in a treasure hunt: collecting clue words from a few select stores will allow free entry into a competition to win prizes donated by local businesses.
Edric said: ‘We have been overwhelmed by the support we have received from Ramsey traders and we have a terrific prize fund with some fantastic prizes. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the traders and the Chamber of Commerce for their support.’
