RAMSEY Rowing Club welcomed the month of May with a newcomers’ race on Mooragh Lake.

Ten crews of four were each assigned an experienced coxswain and competed in heats throughout the day. Conditions were ideal with the Mooragh Park basking in warm sunshine and the water as still as the proverbial mill pond.

The eventual winner was the Thomas Miller Investments (2) team (Jon Curtis, Rob Taylor, Rob sheen and Joe Whitelegg), who received the handsome Mooragh Challenge Trophy from Anne Craine MHK.

The race was organised by Marilyn Gilbert and each team paid £40. One team dropped out, but did not reclaim their entrance fee, so that £440 was raised for the Royal British Legion’s 90th anniversary appeal.

Club secretary, Hugh Freeman said: ‘The event was for people who haven’t rowed before. We could gain around six more members as a result.

‘We have run this event for five years and this was the best we have had. We are hoping next year we will have a lot more crews taking part.’
