IT was chilly, windy and showery, but that didn’t deter hundreds of people from turning up at Castletown’s Poulsom Park last Sunday, May 13, to join in the annual Picnic in the Park.
This was the 14th year that the event – which began as a sports day and grew into a picnic in 2000 – has been held.
Children, in particular, love the races, said organiser Tony Brown, chairman of the Festival Committee, and there is plenty of participation by the adults too. The Frog Frolic, jazz music, stalls and games also attract the crowds.
The festival queen was chosen and this year it is Deanna Hamilton, 14.
Mr Brown said: ‘The fun sports events were well supported – we had a good number of entrants for our Festival Queen 2012 competition and great live music provided by the Jazz Aces – it was all very much enjoyed by the children and parents.
‘We were very pleased with the turnout and I would thank all my committee, our judges and everyone who helped ensure the afternoon event was a success.’
Next up is the town’s festival, on August 4. Mr Brown said: ‘Hopefully the weather will be all right – we want a nice, sunny day. That’s the only bit we cannot control.’
