EUAN IS FIRST WINNER OF ARTS PRIZE

AN art prize in memory of a Castletown woman who died in a house fire has been presented for the first time.

Kate Richardson-Turner, 57, died during a blaze at her home in January last year.

The keen artist made her friend Valerie Cottle a beneficiary of her will and Valerie decided to establish the Richardson-Turner Prize with the cash.

Every year for a decade a student at the Isle of Man College — where Kate had been a foundation student — will receive the 1,000 prize money.

Valerie, of Victoria Terrace, Douglas, said she wanted to give something back to the college which had brought her friend so much inspiration and happiness.

She explained the prize is for drawing as an element in the design process because Kate had greatly prized draughtsmanship.

The first winner was Euan Craine.

The 19-year-old drew his inspiration from the devastation caused to Tholt-Y-Will during last winter's storms.

As an exercise he proposed bringing economic activity to the valley by creating a small, ecologically sound hotel and presented a set of designs for the building and surrounding area.

Course tutor Ian Coulson said: 'His ability to use a wide range of software to generate architectural visuals is breathtaking.'

Valerie presented Euan, of Ballaugh, with his prize at the college last week. College art and design programme manager Helen Fox thanked Valerie for the prize by presenting her with a humorous self-portait Kate did during her course in 1983.

Euan has completed his foundation year and is set to start an architecture course at the Glasgow School of Art and Design this autumn.
