JILL PROMISES A TREAT IN STORE FOR MUSIC FANS

A TALK with musical illustrations presented by Dr Jill White (pictured), a leading expert in the field of classical music, promises to be a real treat for the Ramsey Music Society audience on Monday, January 29.

Jill, whose parents live in the Island, has had a multi-faceted musical career, encompassing opera — she was a singer in the UK and Vienna, music production —– she spent 23 years as a senior music programme producer for BBC Radio 3 and as director of music of the National Youth Orchestra for almost 10 years.

As well as annually auditioning more than 600 of the UK 's most gifted young musicians, she introduced science, literature and the visual arts to the teaching programme of the orchestra, pioneered their Creative programme and instigated a composers' class.

She also musically planned and produced their 50th anniversary tour of Europe, conducted by Sir John Eliot-Gardiner and both she and the orchestra contributed to the 100th birthday celebrations for the Queen Mother.

In 2003 she was awarded an honorary doctor of music degree by the University of Bristol — an honour offered to very few, amongst whom were Ralph Vaughan Williams and Sir Michael Tippett.

The evening will be held at Ramsey Grammar School West Hall at 7.45pm and admission for non-members of 10 on the door.
