PUPILS at Ashley Hill School started their own business to raise money for the Manx Aviation and Military Museum.

The profits – £235.79 – were presented to Ivor Ramsden of the museum, at Ballasalla, on Monday.

Rebecca Thomas, a teacher at the Onchan school, explained the children wanted to raise money so they could make a donation to the museum following a school visit there.

The children were given the task of developing their own business which involved them being given £5 and trying to make it grow.

They decided to make strawberry based products which they then successfully sold to fellow pupils.

Products on sale included strawberry cake, jelly and smoothies.

She said: ‘As well as providing an opportunity for the children to help their community, the children thoroughly enjoyed the project.’

The Manx Aviation and Military Museum is run by the Manx Aviation Preservation Society and opened on Remembrance Day in 2000.

It is dedicated to the Manx men and women who served their island in the cause of freedom, to people of other nations who were brought to our shores by wartime service and to all those who, in war and peace, have lost their lives in the Isle of Man in aviation accidents.

It is estimated there are almost 8,000 items in the museum’s care.

The collection includes a pair of brass Bofors shell casings fired by one of the guns of 41 Battery of the Manx Regiment on September 3 1939, just over two hours after the declaration of war.
