A magical summer is promised at Onchan Library this summer.

Fairies, Vikings and Gef the talking mongoose will join legendary characters that children will meet as part of The Mythical Maze Summer Reading Challenge, produced by The Reading Agency.

Children keep track of the books they borrow from the library and read on a specially illustrated poster.

As they read their way through the challenge, children collect smelly stickers, maze puzzles and book bags, with those who complete it being awarded a medal and certificate.

A Fairy Bridge, fairy hunt, and wishing tree will add to the fun, and children are invited to take part in a ‘Manx Tales Contest’.

There is also a free programme of storytelling, craft and activities to inspire reading, which starts on Tuesday with a ‘Fairies and Little Monsters’ story, colouring and craft session.

Librarian Pam Hand said: ‘Libraries are always magical places, but we have even more in store this summer for Onchan Library’s 70th anniversary. Thanks to Skandia’s generous support, it’s free to take part, with exciting books and goodies to help children get into reading.’

The challenge runs until September 3.
