FISH crates, light shades, tyres, and unwanted sports equipment such as flippers and bike helmets are just some of the items that Fairfield School pupils are being encouraged to play with.
On Saturday, the Play Bins project was launched by former English Rugby Union player Roger Uttley at the Douglas school on behalf of Isle of Man Wooden Spoon and in conjunction with The Children’s Centre.
Play Bins are metal containers holding what might be viewed as rubbish but are seen by the children as a stimulus to create other worlds, constructions and to develop new games.
They encourage children to play creatively, imaginatively and collaboratively.
Fairfield and Ballacloan schools trialled the Play Bins in the last academic year.

Fairfield deputy head teacher Jo McCabe said that a recent pupil survey carried out at the school highlighted the success and popularity of the Play Bins to provide positive play opportunities for all pupils.
Following this, Isle of Man Wooden Spoon, a rugby based charity, will be providing a further five schools with Play Bins this academic year, at a total cost of more than £15,000.
Wooden Spoon organises fundraising initiatives to raise money to improve the quality and prospect of life for children and young people who are disadvantaged physically, mentally or socially.
All funds raised on the island stay in the island.
Roger Uttley was in the island as part of a larger touring party of 70 from London Wasps Rugby Club.
During their visit they were the speakers at a black tie dinner held at the Palace Hotel, in Douglas.
On Saturday, the London Wasps led a training and coaching session for junior rugby players at the National Sports Centre, Douglas. In the afternoon, the island select ladies XV took on Wasps ladies, and Wasps Legends XV played against the Isle of Man Select XV.
