Isle of Man Cancer Services User Forum is holding a ‘Meet the Consultant’ evening with Dr Eliyaz Ahmed from the Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology at Douglas Golf Club, Pulrose, this Sunday evening (September 22) at 7.30pm.
Dr Ahmed is a consultant medical oncologist who visits the island each week and is the consultant most cancer patients will see if they need chemotherapy as part of their cancer treatment.
The evening will offer the chance for people to meet a top consultant and ask questions.
Admission is free and easy parking is available.
Dr Ahmed graduated from Bangalore Medical College in India.
He completed his medical research project on Resistance to Endocrine therapy in Breast Cancer, receiving a PHD from the Imperial College London.
His specialist areas include breast cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, cancer of the unknown primary and acute oncology.
During the evening, Dr Ahmed will talk about the pathway taken by patients diagnosed with cancer in the island, and what his vision is for the future treatment of cancer, and the prevention of cancer.
Vice chairman of the User Forum, Julie Stokes, said: ‘We meet every month and invite a consultant every other month.
‘This is the only place where patients and their carers can go and meet a specialist consultant.
‘This is a unique opportunity to meet Dr Ahmed in a relaxed situation. He will talk for about an hour and then do a question-and-answer session.’
The next evening will be held on Monday, November 25, and will involve a talk from Dr Chenji Ratnavel, who will talk about keyhole surgery and bowel cancer treatment.
The Isle of Man Cancer Services User Forum is made up of people who have or have had cancer, and carers of people with cancer. It also features health professionals who attend the regular meetings.
The forum is an independent group, which aims to represent the voice of people affected by cancer in the Isle of Man and works with health professionals to improve services for people affected by cancer.
It is a place where patients, carers and health professionals can meet to discuss patient issues in cancer services.
