A PARTY was held on Sunday to thank everyone involved with the hugely successful campaign to wipe out a children’s waiting list for specialist diabetic insulin pumps.

Pumps 4 Kids, a joint initiative by the Manx Independent and the Manx Diabetic Group raised more than £55,000 – well exceeding its original target of £20,000.

It has transformed the lives of children with type 1 diabetes, offering them the chance of pump therapy instead of multiple daily injections of lifesaving insulin.

Families of children who received pumps as a result of the campaign, those who made large donations, and representatives from the organisations involved all joined together to celebrate.

Joanne Clague, who organised Pumps 4 Kids along with Joanne Wilkinson and Angela Gregory, said: ‘The campaign started last March. We wanted to do something to say how much we raised and draw a line under it.’

She said it was ‘lovely’ to see so many people attend.

Danielle Wilkinson, aged seven, started using an insulin pump just over four years ago, making a significant difference to her quality of life and making the daily management of type 1 diabetes easier for the whole family.

She helped to launch the campaign last year, and on Sunday, gave a welcoming speech, thanking people for their support.

Paediatric diabetes specialist nurse at Noble’s Hospital, Pam Unsworth, said it was ‘great being able to offer a pump to a family when the time is right for them to have one’.
