A highways worker has told of his brush with death after a tree branch smashed through his Renault Kangoo van’s windscreen on his way home from work.
Ian Watson, from Peel, was driving home from work at the Department of Infrastructure around 4.40pm on Friday when the drama happened.
He said: ‘I was leading a line of traffic, going at around 40mph, next thing there was an explosion as a very big tree limb hit the corner post of the passenger side of my car and broke in two, one part went over the roof and the other down the side of the car.
‘I was showered in glass, the impact was quite bad. I was stunned for a bit, behind me I could see about 12 cars and people struggling to shift the tree off the road, it was a heavy limb.
‘A young lady behind me was very good, she made sure I was ok and offered to drive in front of me all the way home.
‘I went to A and E yesterday, I jerked my neck a bit so it felt like I may have some whiplash, but if that’d hit me I wouldn’t be here now, it must have been inches away!’
