$26 MILLION MOVIE FOR ISLAND

A MOVIE shot in the Isle of Man last year has the honour of being the only film made in the British Isles to have been selected for screening at this year's Cannes Film Festival closing gala.

Chromophobia was directed by Martha Fiennes and starred Penelope Cruz, Rhys Ifans, Ralph Fiennes and Kristen Scott-Thomas.

It is a dark comedy/drama about family secrets, relationships and contemporary London life.

Hilary Dugdale of Isle of Man Film said: 'Whilst we've known for some time that Chromophobia stood an excellent chance of selection, the announcement was a massive boost to the Island's industry and continues a phenomenal 12 month period of growth.'

The closing night gala, on May 21, is traditionally the most eagerly anticipated event of the Cannes calendar.

Trade and Industry Minister Alex Downie said: 'Once again, Isle of Man Film is at the forefront of the world's production industry.'

Meanwhile, in Tynwald this week Mr Downie announced another big budget film would start production in the Island in July.

Stormbreaker, which will be based on the Anthony Horowitz-penned children's book about a young spy, will film at Island Studios, Lezayre.

Mr Downie said the 26 million production was likely to be 'one of the UK's biggest films of 2005'.

Isle of Man Film refused to comment, despite the minister's confirmation, as the production is still subject to Treasury approval. It is not yet know who will star in the film or direct it.

The film industry caused a stir for other reasons in Tynwald last week.

David Cannan (Michael) asked Mr Downie if Island Studios was working to its full potential, whether there was any justification for the the studio's recent planning application (05/0452) for the provision of residential accommodation on site and if the DTI intended to support the application and provide financial assistance.

Mr Downie said Island Studios was a private enterprise and as such the DTI had no input into its plans. He said there had been no approach from studio bosses.
