SURPRISE: Lincolnshires Ray Bennett accepts the plaque from museum director Richard Davis

MANX Grand Prix visitor Ray Bennett, of Spilsby in Lincolnshire, received an unexpected gift while visiting the Jurby Transport Museum, as he was presented with a commemorative plaque as the 30,000th visitor to the museum.

Mr Bennett has been coming to the island for the last 54 years and has only missed two Manx Grand Prix events since 1969.

Museum director Richard Davis was the man to hand over the plaque.

‘He certainly wasn’t expecting it,’ said Mr Davis. ‘With the Festival of Jurby on the same day, TV crews were around for that. Mr Bennett was absolutely amazed, he thought we were having him on!’

He added: ‘This guy has been coming to the island for years. He’s a Manx Grand Prix fan and collects memorabilia. The plaque is one more thing to put on his wall!’

Jurby Transport Museum has been open since Easter 2010. How did staff know Mr Bennett was visitor number 30,000?

‘Someone stands on the door with a click counter,’ said Mr Davis. ‘It’s the only way! The museum is free so we don’t keep track off ticket receipts or anything.’

Mr Davis added presentations have also previously been made to the 10,000th and 20,000th people through the door.

The museum, founded by Mr Davis, contains historic exhibits reflecting the development of public road transport.

It opens at weekends until the end of October, and Sundays throughout winter.
